Jean-Luc Marion’s structural critique of the insufficiency of ontology can largely be interpreted in terms of the intrinsic failure of its PERSONALISM, because as Marion persistently states, the person (from the divine to the human imaging of divinity) is always ultimately beyond being, whether morally above or below its intrinsic goodness as gift. This does not prevent carefully drawing out a regional phenomenological ontology of nature in the spirit of Heidegger (and his implicit dialogue with the Scholastics) from Marion precisely on a personalist basis; he in fact gives excellent resources to do this in The Erotic Phenomenon. Marion’s model of erotic experience is basically that there is an external structure of personal suspension that has to be minded in the lover to keep from trying to sustain flesh as perpetually or absolutely eroticized by the will (“perversion”). If love is really univocal as he says, this problem of exterior suspension can be generalized to structures of natural stability tout court, as they are set in the service of a scientific will to make them material for work. So in order to combat distention (“entropy”), really there are three structural chronemic terms: intention, extension, and suspension (what extension “speaks” to intention as its given). This also potentially allows for a general phenomenological reinterpretation of the Hegelian Aufhebung not as appropriation, but as such an interval of erotic suspension (which already functionally is presupposed for large-scale appropriation to work). Thomism, meanwhile, could be interpreted as something like a time crystal…
