Customs Records Major Breakthrough in Fight Against Wildlife Trafficking in Maiduguri The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Borno/Yobe Area Command, has intercepted endangered wildlife species and smuggled goods in separate operations along major routes in Maiduguri, reinforcing efforts to curb illicit trade and protect Nigeria’s biodiversity. According to a statement issued on 9 April 2026 by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Deputy Superintendent of Customs, Abdullahi Ubali, the seizures were made on Thursday, April 9, 2026, along Kano Road in Maiduguri. The statement disclosed that operatives intercepted two hyenas, one porcupine, and 24 African crowned crane birds concealed in a Mercedes-Benz wagon with registration number ABJ 517 AR. The wildlife species, it noted, are listed under Appendix I and II of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, which affords them the highest level of protection against illegal trade. Ubali explained that the interception underscores the Command’s commitment to combating wildlife trafficking, adding that protecting endangered species remains a core statutory responsibility of the NCS. “It is one of the mandates of the NCS to ensure that wildlife species are protected, and their survival is not threatened,” the statement read. According to the statement, the seized animals have a Duty Paid Value (DPV) estimated at ₦10 million. Reacting to the development, the Customs Area Controller of the Command, Comptroller Abdullahi Idris, warned that the Service would not tolerate wildlife trafficking within its area of responsibility. “We will not tolerate wildlife trafficking in our territory. We are working tirelessly with relevant partners and sister agencies to protect Nigeria’s wildlife heritage and bring perpetrators to justice,” Idris was quoted as saying in the statement. In a related operation, the Command intercepted a Volkswagen Golf vehicle along the Nguru–Gashua Road in Yobe State. The vehicle was found to be conveying 65 cartons of foreign juice branded “Djino Cocktail de Fruits,” concealed with two 50kg bags of Arabic gum and sugar. The smuggled items were valued at ₦2.73 million, bringing the cumulative Duty Paid Value of all seizures to ₦12.73 million. The Command urged members of the public to remain law-abiding and to support enforcement efforts by providing credible information that could help tackle wildlife trafficking and other forms of smuggling.

‼️ZELENSKYY: We will not sell our weapons like we did in the 1990s. Instead, we will share our knowledge and expertise in exchange for long-term, mutually beneficial security partnerships with Ukraine. “We're building new partnerships on weapons differently than in the nineties or two thousands, when Ukrainian weapons and forces were sold off like it's Black Friday. We're not holding a fire sale of our weapons or emptying our warehouses. We're offering a security partnership that's long-term and profitable for Ukraine” - Zelenskyy’s address to the workers of Ukraine’s defense-industrial complex. April 13th, 2026.

Watch the top general of the United States Africa Command meet with the Chief of the Somaliland Armed Forces in Berbera, where they are aligning their strategies. The Berbera base deal is coming together. Establishing a new foothold near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and Red Sea could significantly alter the United States’ approach to countering the Houthis and Iran. Recognition of the Republic of Somaliland is crucial for peace, and strengthening the alliance with Somaliland is essential.

NIGERIAN ARMY ENHANCES INTER-AGENCY SYNERGY THROUGH PROTOCOL, LIAISON CAPACITY BUILDING The Nigerian Army (NA), through the Army Headquarters Department of Special Services and Programmes (DSSP), on Tuesday, 14 April 2026, convened a capacity-building workshop in Abuja to enhance personnel proficiency in protocol and liaison functions, as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen joint and multi-agency operations in support of national security. Declaring the workshop open at the Nigerian Army Conference Centre and Suites, Abuja , the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, underscored the critical role of effective coordination, collaboration and seamless engagement with sister services, security agencies and international partners in addressing Nigeria’s evolving and complex security landscape. In a keynote address titled “Navigating the Complexities of Managing Protocol and Liaison Duties within a Joint and Multi-Agency Environment,” the COAS, represented by the Chief of Administration (Army), Major General Isa Abdullahi, highlighted the expanding scope of the Nigerian Army’s operational and diplomatic engagements. He noted that increasing bilateral cooperation and inter-agency collaboration necessitate enhanced competencies in protocol management, liaison responsibilities, and professional conduct. The COAS further stated that the initiative reflects the Nigerian Army’s strategic commitment to strengthening national security through improved inter-agency coordination, adherence to global best practices and continuous institutional capacity development. He added that the training aligns with his command philosophy of advancing the transformation of the Nigerian Army into a more professional, adaptable, combat ready and resilient force capable of decisively discharging its constitutional responsibilities within a joint and multi agency environments. He commended the DSSP for its forward-looking approach in facilitating the workshop in collaboration with subject-matter experts, noting that such engagements are instrumental in fostering synergy, deepening stakeholder relationships and enhancing operational effectiveness across various theatres of operation. He also acknowledged the sustained support of the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, while reaffirming the Nigerian Army’s loyalty and unwavering commitment to its constitutional mandate. In his welcome address, the Chief of Special Services and Programmes, Major General Aminu Garba, reiterated the Department’s commitment to continuous professional development. He noted that since its establishment in 2022, the DSSP has consistently prioritised the enhancement of protocol and liaison functions within the Nigerian Army. The workshop featured expert-led lectures and interactive sessions covering diplomatic protocol, liaison management, order of precedence and official etiquette, all aimed at strengthening joint operations and reinforcing public confidence in the Nigerian Army. This is one problem the north must begin to solve now. There is no reason a man who cannot properly take care of one wife and two children should marry three wives and produce fifteen or seventeen children. Many of today’s terrorists and bandits were once innocent children roaming the streets, hungry, uneducated, and forgotten. Abandoned children, like these ones will certainly grow up angry, desperate and dangerous. Each time I see them on major roads in Abuja carrying plastic bowl, my questions were always "how did they get here? Who are their parents? What will these unaccounted children become in future?" I am sure some people will still come here to blame government. But what can the government do in the case of a gate-man earning say N60k per month, but has four wives and 17 children?

Minister of Defense, Gen. CG Musa, on recent increase in attacks: Bomb making has increased, there were three bomb blasts in particular day. Those targets were likely targeted for political reasons. Whenever it's a political year, such incidents increase. Why is that so? Individuals want to gain an advantage by making the government look weak.
