Detective Constable John Hamilton, 55, sent the vulnerable girl late night voice messages and offered to take her on a drive near where her abuser had taken her. Hamilton was sentenced to 18 months in jail at Teesside Crown Court on Friday (April 10) after being found guilty of misconduct in a public office. Recorder of Middlesbrough, Judge Francis Laird KC, said Hamilton had breached the trust placed in him by a "highly vulnerable" teenager who he said had turned to the police for help.

Her name was Maria Landenburger, a 19-year-old medical student from Germany. One day, while she was in a park, she was attacked by an Afghan migrant, Hussein Khavari. He chased her, pushed her to the ground, and knocked her off her bicycle. As she lay there, he strangled her and repeatedly raped her before leaving her unconscious on the riverbank, where she ultimately drowned. Police later identified him through DNA evidence. He was eventually convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment for rape and murder. It later emerged that, before arriving in Germany, he had already served time in Greece for attempting to rob and murder another young woman.

Absolutely horrific. Two Slovakian men came across a 12 year old girl in a supermarket car park in Dover. They lured her into the car with a cigarette on August 11, 2024. They then plied her with drugs including crystal methamphetamine and amphetamine before she was raped and subjected to sexual acts by them and a third man, Ernest Gunar, 27, over a two-day period. They moved her from place to place subjecting her to an horrendous ordeal in each place. She was told she would be killed if she told anyone. She eventually escaped by waking before them one morning. They claimed in court that she was 19 or 20. The judge said that there was no chance she looked that age. They were found guilty in 2025 and two were sentenced to 19 years in prison and one to 17 years in prison.
