@brill_ag @ipaddockapps That’s an interesting scatter. in what situation do legumes consume N? Like a 12t biomass of legumes with a -ve balance?

@ipaddockapps We've measured that the average legume crop (with biomass ~6.5 t/ha) has N balance of ~100 kg N/ha. That won't be all available in first crop but adds a lot to the profitability of pulses when N is expensive and even more so when you can't get N

So in the edge case that urea doesn't land in Au this year: Brainstorming strategies to reduce N requirement &/or increase yield under constrained N. Is it a year to burn stubbles? Tillage (with what fuel!) ? What else?

So Aussie farmers, what is your most pressing concern in your situation? Fuel, nitrogen, phosphorous? Or sorted?

It pays to have a great relationship with your fuel company…. I ordered fuel a few days ago and wasn’t expecting it for a while but they dropped off some this morning just to keep us going. More to come. Legends!

#Agtwitter. How are you utilising artificial intelligence in your ag business today? Plenty of theoretical and potential uses but I’m interested in what people’s first steps have been and what they have actually gotten value from. TIA & RT Appreciated.

@cosfarming This doesn’t seem fair 😂 haha I have to battle tooth and nail to keep ours alive in the garden.. that surely has tapped into some deep water? Different soil world here 🤷🏽‍♂️

@CasFarmerCD Probably should give them a try, but getting weight has always been the issue up here. September has been as good as useless to us in recent years

No need for elevation maps when there’s frost around 😂 At least this lake country has somewhere for the cool air to go, our flat country nearly always fairs worse. Never enough hills 🤣

Headers just ticked over 400hrs for the season, bit over 2/3rds the way through. 🤞🏻a few more crops like this and 🤞🏻we don’t find too much more frost.

@HoolyMcg @PASE_Inc Only a tonne, thunder 1.5, a rain in September and not 38° windy day might have helped. Half the flowers got cooked, but in saying that, the peas got stitched up by the same finish

3rd try at lentils better than the previous attempts. However with lentil prices where they are I won’t try again next year. Thunder south of blue line are a huge improvement on bolt. Peas will continue to be our legume, better agronomics and harvestability

Need clean, even soil type, good ph, can’t spray anything on them. Need to harvest as a priority as soon as ready so they don’t get closer to the ground. Not as good as peas for putting n in soil. All things I could look past if they worth $800 😂

@Ashley_Jacobs92 This year we had barley on wheat on brown manure vetch yield 400kg more than the barley that was on fallow instead of vetch. So the legacy N was the winner. But the vetch does owe that much back, and I was pretty stingy with added N

Canola on chemical fallow out yielding Canola on lupin stubble by 850kg. 50% yield improvement and 2% oil gain from stored moisture. 2 year returns come out approx $200/ha ahead despite high return lupin crop. Chemical fallow a handy tool in multiple sub 200mm GSR seasons
