@SweatieAngle Sorry bout the ridiculous pile on - 99% of your Irish cousins would totally get what you mean - but the unrepresenitive 1% who'd prefer to get up on their high horse about everything seem to have taken over Irish Twitter!

@DanaTano501 I’m an American of Irish immigrant descent which means I do care about getting the spelling of Irish words correct but (clearly) only in the obnoxious sort of way immediately guaranteed to piss actual Irish people off - so ah yeah pretty much

Irish spelling vs pronunciation is always such absolute bullshit you can really tell it’s supposed to be written out using, like, potato runes and they just sorta threw the Latin alphabet stuff together an afterthought. Sidhe pronounced ‘she’ get the fuck outta here

@Frank_Connolly_ The PIRA campaign lasting 10 times longer than the WoI, meant that it lost most of the tacit support it once had in the south, well before the end, as the human cost mounted. Also, PIRA viewed the southern state, incl. guards and soldiers as enemies, which appalled southerns.

Why do free staters think 1920s RA good, 1970s-1990s RA bad? I need serious and sincere answers to this question from actual free staters/west brits/jackeens.

@RobLooseCannon @keeper_irish That's very fair + balanced. I think though, with the Church being so powerful,Dev needed McQuaid's endorsement to get the public to buy in to the Constitution-at least it recognised religious minorities, esp. Judaism, given what was happening in Europe, against McQuaid's wishes

I agree with you both. I still maintain allowing/requesting McQuaid help draft the constitution and then giving him unprecedented overreach was not great leadership. In their defence, if it wasn't for the Catholic making up for the massive gaps in policy and resources for education and health care we'd have been a failed state

There was a Communists "Red Scare" that changed the face of Ireland in th 1932 election. The Free State was only a decade old suffering from the affects of the Great Depression on agricultural exports. So unemployment was wrecking rural areas. The authority of the government, which was Cumann na nGaedheal since independence, was getting sketchy. So faced with a frustrated electorate they couldn't or wouldn't satisfy and the looming prospect of electoral defeat, they pulled out that old chestnut. A scapegoat. And Commies were very in that season. So they covered up the portraits of Connolly and Larkin and rather than contesting the election on economic policy or social reform, Cumann na nGaedheal with a hefty dose of Catholicism redefined the contest as a " moral and civilisational struggle". Now, the Dublin Time Machine is no fan of Dev. But these lad's peddled that vote for Éamon de Valera’s Fianna Fáil circa 1932, was a vote for chaos, atheism, and Bolshevism! Irelandnstood on the brink of a godless Communist republic. Despite Dev actually turning it into Catholic theocracy for decades. But history is fecked that way. The propaganda characterised of the Long Fella as an Irish Stalin. Cumann na nGaedheal publicly called him a Soviet dictator, claiming Fianna Fáil’s brand of republicanism and economic nationalism were camouflage for Marxist revolution and a Communist takeover. Whilst Rome was actually the real power turning us into an ideological vassal state. All over Ireland was the slogan “Gunmen and Communists”. Fianna Fáil were portrayed as the political wing of the IRA, which at the time included prominent left-wing republicans like as Peadar O’Donnell. The implication was a vote for de Valera was Bolshevism. The Irish Independent, then fiercely loyal to the government, juxtaposed coverage of Communist unrest abroad in Spain, with reporting on the Irish election. Associating Fianna Fáil with international Marxist violence, foreign instability, and of a scandalous bit of anti-clerical murder and bloodshed. Again I cant stress enough for younger DTM passengers how different every one of these political parties and economic ideologies were then! In 1931, just months before polling day, the Irish bishops issued a joint pastoral letter condemning organisations such as Saor Éire as “frankly communistic” and “sinful”. While Fianna Fáil were not named, their perceived tolerance of radical republican elements made the message unmistakable. The effect on the vast majority of Catholics was profound. Cumann na nGaedheal campaign posters with “We Want No ‘Reds’ Here! Keep Their Colour Off Your Flag!” covered every available surface in Dublin city centre. But for all its intensity, the aul Red Scare failed? Fianna Fáil won the election, securing 72 seats to Cumann na nGaedheal’s 57. FF went on to form a government with Labour support. So how did the massive propaganda wave not sway the Irish voter. Well most historians will tell you it was the economics. So unemployment, emigration, and collapsing farm incomes outweighing the abstract warnings about Marxist revolution. Thats partially true. A sizable slice Irish people swallowed the propaganda hook line and sinker. But none of them feckin voted. Not in any meaningful numbers. And Dev countered ideological panic with social policy, promising housing, employment schemes, and protectionist measures to revive domestic industry. Finally, Cumann na nGaedheal overreached. The prosecution of The Irish Press, Fianna Fáil’s newspaper, and the decision to bring its editor before a military tribunal, struck most voter as authoritarian and desperate. A party that claimed to be defending democracy appeared increasingly willing to suspend it and Paddy's had enough of that shite for a generation or two. @workmansflopera @thejournal_ie There's every chance she is as appalled as you are about what's been happening in Gaza. As an 82 yo survivor of the Holocaust, personally I think you should show her more respect, even if her definition of genocide might not appear to be the same as yours.

The findings could not be clearer The Irish had been left to their own devices for some 3000 years This is unsurprising for an island outcrop on Europes western edge, before the advent of ocean seafaring One that avoided Roman & Saxon interests They were not isolated - they traded and talked, bought and borrowed The Celts inspired The Roman religion of Christianity was keenly embraced But the Irish identity we know today was an internal evolution of culture & values - a self established, all island society that would resist later efforts at ehtnocide - and still seeks refinement today (13)

@ionainstitute That graph shows a big increase after the introduction of divorce in 1995, sustained until the height of the boom, before falling noticeably since then.

Look at how dramatically the number of people who have divorced or separated in Ireland has increased. What's driving this, and is the big increase something we should worry about?

Once solely an Irish tradition, Nollaig na mBan is now celebrated by Irish women around the world, echoing Ireland’s emigration experience. How fitting that Eavan Boland’s ‘The Emigrant Irish’ greets all who enter our new @IrelandEmbUSA chancery.

@Tuigim I just can't imagine how rattled I'd be if the Irish disapora was the target of hate crimes worldwide, the way the Jewish disapora has been historically and up to the present-I think it's good that Irish political leaders express solidarity with their Irish Jewish fellow citizens

@dosipadd @MichealMartinTD @RachelMoiselle No. It's Micheál pandering to Zionists. Condemn the mass shooting. Don't fall into the 'antisemitism is the cause' trap. That's used to slaughter more Palestinians. It plays into the Zionists' hands and causes more slaughter in Gaza and beyond. Stop gun violence & stop Zionists.

My deepest sympathies to the people of Australia and our Jewish community following the horrific attack at Bondi Beach. I want to send a clear message: Our Jewish neighbours are a valued part of Irish society. There is absolutely no place for antisemitism in our State.

@RachelMoiselle The anti-semitic nature of the atrocity wasn't clear initially when the Taoiseach sent that tweet. His official statement, issued when the nature of the crime was established, is categorical in condeming this horrific attack on the Jewish community.

@LarryPDonnelly @djcpmoore Even referring to it as 'interesting' can be interpreted as vaguely supporting the book. It's written by a right-wing shrill with neo-fascist views on life and society. Lenihan's interview was a welcome shakedown. Please, never describe an interview with the fash as 'interesting'

@john_mcguirk So it's the right result because the democratic process would have produced an outcome you and Lindsay Graham didn't want? This is your hero Herzog being roundly condemned and protested by *checks notes* the radicals of young Fine Gael for his role in attacking our troops.

This may be heresy on my part, but it's the right result by the wrong mechanism. Withdrawing the report "because there's not enough information" is bullshit. They're pulling it because they'd have lost the vote. The City Council remains radically left wing and determined to pursue ideological ends regardless of the impact on Irish citizens or the country's reputation. Taking the toys off them obscures this point, it doesn't change it. Having the motion pulled is not a display of strength, but an admission of weakness. If a majority of the council in the Capital City is this radical and extreme (and it is) THAT's the real story. thejournal.ie/therzog-park-r…

I’ve no issue with people having cats, but hearing their ability to kill wild animals being championed on a poplar evening current affairs radio show is very odd. It’s estimated they kill 16 million birds a year in Ireland. I think we need a bit more responsible messaging.
