Sickle Cell Disease: An Illustrated Guide for Nigerians
Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a serious inherited blood disorder that affects millions worldwide — with Nigeria carrying the heaviest burden. Around 150,000 babies are born with SCD here every year, and up to 25% of Nigerians carry the sickle cell trait. In healthy people, red blood cells are round and flexible, delivering oxygen smoothly. In SCD, a genetic change makes them hard, sticky, and sickle-shaped, blocking blood flow and breaking down quickly. This leads to pain, anemia, and organ damage. Early awareness and care can change lives.
