Kidnapped Tricycle Operator Outsmarts Bandits, Uses Igbo Language to Reveal Hideout A tricycle operator, Dennis Izuchukwu Okechi, has narrated how he secretly revealed the location of his captors to his community while speaking Igbo during a ransom call, leading to his rescue in Abia State. Okechi and a farmer, Onyinyechi Ekechukwu, were abducted by six armed bandits while returning from their farm in Ohuhu, Umuahia North LGA. The kidnappers reportedly beat the victims and demanded a ₦10 million ransom. When handed a phone to contact his family, Okechi switched to Igbo and discreetly disclosed that they were being held in the Udengwu forest. The move reportedly angered the kidnappers, who threatened to shoot him after realizing they could not understand what he had told his people. Acting on the information, local youths and members of the Umuawa Alaocha community security outfit launched a search operation and stormed the forest around midnight. The bandits fled on sighting the rescue team, leaving the victims behind. Speaking from his hospital bed, Okechi thanked community leaders and youths whose swift action secured their freedom. Reacting to the incident, the lawmaker representing Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal Constituency, Obi Aguocha, condemned the attack and called for heightened vigilance to tackle the growing threat of kidnapping and banditry across the region.
