My morning routine for 2 hours of deep work every day: 1. Get up at 7am 2. Walk my ass over the coffee shop 3. Order a large cup of the hot stuff 4. Sit down 5. Phone: OFF 6. Siteblocker: ON 7. Noise cancelling headphones: ON 8. YouTube megamix: ON 9. Pomodoro timer: ON 10. Then, I work on the MIT for 2 hours (most important thing) That's it. No 5am wakeup, no sauna, ice bath, meditation, blah blah blah. By ~9:30am, I got the hard stuff done. The rest of the day my ADD takes over and that's OK.

I’ve been studying Japanese on and off for the last three years. Now I think it’s time to really get serious and kick it up a notch, and I thought I’d share my journey here on X. First - why Japanese? I love Japan, go every year, and really wish I could communicate with people better. I’ve also found I love small towns in Japan, and knowing Japanese would definitely make it a lot easier for me to visit these places in particular. Since I’ve been lightly studying Japanese for the last three years I have learned a lot about the different resources out there to learn the language, and what seems to work the best for me. Currently I know Hiragana and Katakana, and some basic conversational Japanese. I can ask for directions, comment on the weather, and let people know that I speak a little Japanese. If you’re just starting your journey learning Japanese, definitely learn Hiragana and Katakana - this is an absolute must, and the place I think most will agree you should start. For me, at this stage, there’s three things I’m doing as I amp things up and really get serious: 1. Learning Kanji - for this I’m using @WaniKaniApp, it’s an awesome platform for learning 2,000+ Kanji in about a year 2. Private tutoring - working with a Japanese tutor (in Japan) remotely to really hone my pronunciation and keep me on track 3. Pimsleur - I found that the @Pimsleur methodology really seems to work for me, the lessons stick. The Pimsleur methodology works by doing a lesson a day and compounding what you learn so doing lessons daily is critical. I’ve fallen off the wagon early in the past so going to push to stick to a daily ritual here for as long as I can. To help keep myself accountable I’m going to try to write a post like this every Sunday on X sharing how I did the previous week. If you’re learning Japanese as well and want to do the same maybe we can all keep each other accountable, or you can just follow my journey.
