🚨EU countries are calling to deny Schengen access to current and former Russian combatants. A prime minister–led initiative has been sent to the EU Commission and the EU Council. The proposal is led by Estonia and supported by Lithuania, Finland, Poland, Germany, Romania, Latvia, and Sweden. In a joint letter, the countries call on other EU members to support the initiative and push for a coordinated response in the March European Council conclusions. “More than 180,000 previously convicted criminals were recruited from Russian prisons and sent to the front. This creates grounds for targeted visa restrictions, including a category covering "identified former and current combatants of an aggressor state". Measures could include denying visas and residence permits and imposing long-term entry bans across the entire Schengen Area.” You can read the full letter below 👇 politico.eu/wp-content/upl…

The latest report by the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on Ukraine, along with its accompanying paper on the illegal deportation of Ukrainian children, provides yet another detailed account of Russia’s systematic brutality. Russia is irrefutably committing crimes against humanity, employing a range of tactics that violate international humanitarian law and international human rights standards. The forced deportation of children, the execution and torture of Ukrainian prisoners of war, and the imposition of unlawful sentences on civilian detainees in occupied territories are only a few examples of the methods in Russia’s arsenal. The international community has more than enough grounds to hold Russia accountable. We must intensify political & economic pressure and continue strengthening accountability mechanisms, through the Special Tribunal at the @coe, through the @IntlCrimCourt. Justice cannot be delayed. Accountability needs to become inevitable.
