New paper! We can do functional genomics to study how genes affect behavior in wild, non-model organisms— but it takes lots of dedication. Congrats to @evolutionsultan and kudos for the dedication to making this possible in social wasps!

To celebrate my b-day, look at our manuscript in @InsSociaux! We report our successes and less-than-successes when developing RNAi in paper wasps. Of special interest to anyone considering RNAi in non-model systems. @Amy_L_Toth @IDsignals @AndrewGuinness link.springer.com/article/10.100…

@GangloffLab_OWU True, I remember that! I was thinking more fictional (or based on someone) characters in a story.

Has there ever been a postdoc in a movie?

@IDsignals If you need to speed along one of the dinners so you can get back to the other, ask if you can have a bite of their dinner and then quickly scarf down the whole meal.

@evolutionsultan That would be the ideal. Real chef’s kiss level flourish to the whole scenario. It’s at the Heights, so possible they could be in different rooms to help pull it off

I was invited to two different seminar dinners at the same restaurant at the same time this week. Do I accept both and comically switch between tables all night?

Blinding reviewers to a manuscript's authors is a nice idea, but it's nearly impossible to not figure out whose paper I'm reviewing from the species, location, and questions being addressed.

@bhjuarez Crap probably, haha. I basically just advertised to all the editors desperately looking for reviewers that they can guilt me into doing it.

@bhjuarez That's true. If I know the editor, I have a much harder time saying no (and by "hard time saying no", I mean I always say "yes").

@evolutionsultan Same. My exceptions are colleagues I respect who ask me to review or articles in my wheelhouse that i can add tons of value to as a reviewer. I'm open to changing my system, but definitely looking to review less now that I've reviewed quite a few articles

@bhjuarez I still end up reviewing more than I publish, but I'm adopting a '23 policy of only saying yes to free reviewing for society journals (especially societies I'm a member of).

@bhjuarez Journals have enjoyed being the key-holders of our most important currency for long enough that they know they can keep us hostage to their system. Refusing to review for free is one of the better tools we have to force a change!
