Holding power to account and documenting history by reporting in risky situations means we need a sector of journalists who have no tie to any particular outlet, but instead a close connection to a place, a beat, or an investigation.

Many newsrooms have reporters dedicated to climate change, of course. But freelancers operate with a level of independence that allows them to follow a nuanced beat or angle and get it in front of a variety of audiences. There's value in that, as well.

As it heats up in Europe, the UK and parts of the US and rich countries consider #climatechange, it's worth remembering that freelance journalists have been independently sticking with this beat from the world's most frontline spots for years.
