WHY EASTER IS OUR STRANGEST STORY, by Martin Shaw C.S. Lewis was once known to have said that anyone who calls the Gospels a myth clearly hasn’t read many myths. I think he’s referring to this extraordinary collision of time signatures. This most essential theme of myth lands in the dust and pain and wonder of the life of Jesus. Suddenly myth has a postcode. No fairytale reads like the Gospel of Mark. It’s rough, startling and feels an awful lot like reportage. It’s no longer happening “long ago, or in some other time” but right here in Kronos time. We even started counting modern time — A.D. — from this moment. My contention is that the “American Tolkien” isn’t someone like GRRM or Robert Jordan. They’re essentially telling European stories, dealing with matters of rightful kings and chosen ones. The American Tolkien is Burroughs, and his LOTR is the Mars series. A Confederate veteran travels to a savage world that resembles a fantastical version of the Arizona desert. He must learn the ways of the locals, master the wilderness, and carve out a prosperous life for himself through grit, bravery, and sheer exceptionalism. It doesn’t get more American than that.

I love that. It’s really rough watching something like Ridley Scott’s “The Last Duel” and seeing how the New Atheist movement strips the sacred-social order away from the past and creates a world comprised only of charlatans, rubes, and victims. In contrast I genuinely enjoyed Egger’s more recent film, “The Northman,” because even though he also desaturated the filter, he actually allowed the world of the past to speak for itself (minus the one unfortunate fight scene with the draugr). So there’s hope that there’s still space to rediscovering this wonder in pop culture.

@geharrell @chrbaxter_yt I love how it reaffirms that there is nothing new under the sun, exposes myths about the Middle Ages and introduces a new audience to the wonder, colour & vitality of this time in history. I like the mix of scholarly references and pop culture vignettes, as I think it will land.
