@AcademicSurgery #AASCHAT sustainable global surgery projects may also take different forms than traditional clinical surgical outcomes research. Consider studies of systems, implementation science, multidisciplinary projects to address priority diseases or populations.

@AcademicSurgery #AASChat great question. Close relationship with the local team and a locally driven research question will help.

Please take a minute to introduce yourself. Even if you’re only planning to “lurk” (read along w/out commenting) it’s helpful knowing the faces in the audience 😊. We will introduce the first question in a few minutes. Please be sure to include #AASChat on your replies.

It was very institution-specific since #residency educational requirements are stringent. Many residents were taking vacation time to do trips or only during “lighter” research year(s) #AWSchat #GlobalSurgery

It’s a team sport-everyone (students, residents, fellows & surgeons at any point in their career) have something to contribute. Also many roles for non-surgeons #AWSchat #GlobalSurgery

A3 Great question @ahalpernunc! Recurring missions with a focus on helping local surgeons achieve their goals may be one way to start. Surgical capacity building programs embedded in local non-profit healthcare service organizations e.g. @PIH are another opportunity. #awschat

Responding to local physician and patient needs is very important. Training in surgical practice is one of the greatest contributions we can make globally. #awschat
