@pingiun_ @TherumFollower In Swift: let s = "🤷‍♂️" s.count // 1 s.unicodeScalars.count // 4 s.utf16.count // 5 s.utf8.count // 13

@pingiun_ @TherumFollower There are exceptions and complexities, but strings are natively Unicode and internally can be utf-8 or -16, can contain combining characters or emoji, etc. so individual characters can be different internal lengths, thus, counting them needs to walk over them.

@OldManKris I don't think it's possible to explain anything to someone who insists on asking the wrong questions.

@optshiftk In my defense, it was _significantly_ faster in that case!

"bullet point summary of what your code commits have achieved in the past 6 months": Well, probably most impactful, I made a one line change to optimize encryption key rollover scanning to only look at needed instead of all files... had it reviewed by a co-worker, of course...

@amcvittie What's really poetic is how your description isn't "shitty(?) poetry". Like, you're pretty certain it's shitty, it's just whether or not it's poetry that is unclear.

My toxic trait is the urge to post shitty poetry(?) I’ve scribbled into Notes lately to get it outta my brain entirely because the site might explode.

@CastIrony It's also possible that he used to be more exposed to the real world (i.e. less dumb) and in the last decade or so he's ended up in a billionaire bubble and just has no conception of the thought processes of the people who work for him any more.

@TeslaRoshi @peterclowes "Keep me, personally, Elon Musk, from losing money on my investment" is not a vision that anyone besides Elon (and apparently you) is actually going to be motivated to work hard for. This should be obvious.

@peterclowes Respectfully, the vision was shared by EM on many occasions… and as a senior member of a company, you yourself should push for what you see as important/attractive to users What was needed firstly, and should be obvious, is Twitter needs to bring in more than they spend🤷🏻‍♂️

Why I left @twitter or rather why I did not sign up for “extremely hardcore” Twitter 2.0 🧵

But like… WHY are bodysuits back? Didn’t we learn before that you can just tuck in a fitted shirt without making it hard to pee/getting a full crotch wedgie? As a long-waisted lady who survived the 90s, I object to this fashion amnesia…

@evandyer @alexeheath @lookner So he replaces them. And they learn how the code works from whom? And it takes how long? Software engineers are not perfectly replaceable cogs in a machine, they each have individual knowledge of the code base that no one else has.

Word inside Twitter is that A LOT of employees are not saying “yes” to staying at Musk’s “extremely hardcore Twitter 2.0.” He has been meeting today with engineers to convince them to stay. His deadline to decide to stay or leave expired 6 min ago. theverge.com/2022/11/17/234…

@myerscb @evacide @benjaminlowe Not funny, but same point: Imagine those 7500 are bloated layabouts. They each do 20% of the work they should. If you cut 80% of those people, you still lose 80% of the knowledge of how the place runs. Your 20% 'hardcore' COULD do all the work but only know how to do 20% of it.
