The GCC countries (especially Saudi, UAE, Qatar, Bahrain) get almost all their drinking water from coastal desalination plants. One major plant in Saudi Arabia supplies over 90% of Riyadh’s water. Unlike oil, you can’t easily stockpile water or ship it in from somewhere else. If those desalination plants get seriously hit, entire cities could face acute water shortages in a matter of days. Two plants have already been struck. Even if the damage was limited, the precedent is terrifying. Oil shocks hurt economies, but water shocks can break societies.
