💢 WSJ: UAE was Secretly Striking Iran, Including Attack on Oil Refinery After Ceasefire The United Arab Emirates has carried out military strikes against Iran without public acknowledgment, the Wall Street Journal reported Monday, citing people familiar with the matter. The strikes included an attack on a refinery on Iran’s Lavan Island in the Persian Gulf in early April — right after Trump announced a ceasefire — sparking a large fire and knocking much of the facility offline for months. Iran had attributed the strike to the UAE at the time and responded with missile and drone attacks on the UAE and Kuwait. Sources told the Journal the Trump administration was not upset by the strike because the ceasefire had not yet “settled into place.” The UAE’s foreign ministry declined to comment but pointed to previous statements asserting its right to respond militarily to hostile acts. The Pentagon also declined to comment. Iran has launched more than 2,800 missiles and drones at the UAE during the war — more than against any other country except Israel.

Billionaires are an existential threat to democracy and indeed to all of humanity. In a sane world, they’d be taxed out of existence.

Known as “the woman who avenged Che Guevara,” Monika Ertl was the daughter of Hans Ertl, one of Nazi Germany’s leading propaganda filmmakers. After the Second World War, she fled to Bolivia with her family, like many nazi fugitives. Her father continued to associate there with figures such as Klaus Barbie, the Nazi war criminal known as the “Butcher of Lyon.” However, Monika turned her back on everything that environment represented. In the late 1960s, affected by poverty and injustice in Bolivia, she broke away from the fascist world around her father and became radicalized. After Che Guevara was killed in Bolivia, she joined the National Liberation Army (ELN) that he had founded. Her codename was now “Imilla,” meaning “Little Girl” in an Indigenous language. The event that made Monika Ertl known worldwide took place on April 1, 1971: the killing of Roberto Quintanilla, Bolivia’s consul in Hamburg and a former intelligence official considered one of those chiefly responsible for Che Guevara’s death. Quintanilla was one of the men who posed beside Che Guevara’s lifeless body and gave the order for his hands to be cut off. Monika entered the consulate building in Hamburg disguised as an elegant woman. When she came face to face with Quintanilla, she drew her weapon and shot him three times. In the note she left at the scene were the words: “Hasta la victoria o muerte.” This act echoed worldwide as “Che’s revenge.” After the assassination, Monika returned to Bolivia and continued underground activities. One of her biggest targets was to kidnap Nazi war criminal Klaus Barbie, an old friend of her father who at that time was advising the Bolivian dictatorship. However, on May 12, 1973, she was ambushed by Bolivian security forces. She was killed in a clash in the streets of La Paz. Her grave was kept secret and her body was never handed over to her family. Monika Ertl became one of the most extreme examples of devotion to a cause by rejecting her origins and privileged life. As both a German and a Bolivian revolutionary, she became one of the symbols of the anti-fascist bridge between Europe and Latin America.

The genius of American empire, and it is a kind of genius, a dark and studied one, is that it made its own citizens into its most effective defenders without ever formally conscripting them. No one told the average American: your identity must be fused with the actions of your government so that any criticism of the government feels like a personal attack on your soul. It happened through accumulation. Through decades of films and textbooks and news anchors and political speeches and sports stadium flyovers and the casual, omnipresent, never-interrogated assumption that America is the main character of history. The main character does not commit atrocities. The main character makes difficult decisions. The main character has flaws that are part of their journey. The main character's violence is always, on some level, justified by the narrative logic of the story. The people the main character kills are not main characters. They are plot devices. Obstacles. Context. Sad music for thirty seconds and then a cut to the protagonist processing their trauma. By the time most Americans encounter a real challenge to this story, an actual, sourced, detailed account of what American power has done to specific people in specific places, they are not encountering it as new information. They are encountering it as an attack on their personhood. And they fight it the way you fight an attack on your personhood. Not with evidence. With fury.

The bloodiest lie of the last century is that Western domination was a civilizing force. Civilization for whom? For the villages burned from the sky. For the forests poisoned. For the islands turned into bases. For the nations strangled by debt and called "corrupt" when they collapsed. No. What they civilized was extraction. What they modernized was plunder. What they globalized was submission.

The War on Drugs was never about drugs. Nixon's domestic policy advisor John Ehrlichman said it himself, on the record, in 1994: "We knew we couldn't make it illegal to be against the Vietnam War or Black, but by getting the public to associate the hippies with marijuana and Blacks with heroin, and then criminalizing both heavily, we could disrupt those communities. Did we know we were lying about the drugs? Of course we did." The architect of the drug war admitted it was a political weapon. Not a health policy. Not a safety initiative. A weapon aimed at Black communities and antiwar organizing. That was 1971. The weapon is still firing.

After slavery ended in Guyana, Africans purchased Victoria Village and established their own local political system. One of the interesting aspects of the village movement in Guyana was the fact that women were allowed the right to vote. This was before women in England and the US could vote.

This was inevitable. The genocide began in Gaza, and when Western regimes demonstrated that they would tolerate and even support Israel’s genocide there, Israel expanded the genocide to the West Bank and south Lebanon. Again, Western regimes elected to support Israel’s atrocities there, so Israel has begun to carry out a genocide in East Jerusalem. Unless and until Israel is held accountable, it will continue to expand the genocide and, inevitably, it will inflict its sadism on Palestinian citizens of Israel. All of this is the handiwork of Western governments. Those of us living in the West are ruled by monsters.
