3:10 p.m. — Short range weather models suggest heavy snow potential this evening With a coastal low beginning to rapidly intensify east of the Virginia Capes, the area continues to see widespread rain and snow with additional precipitation developing and moving in. Multiple runs of multiple high-resolution weather models show the potential for zones of 1-to-2 inch per hour snowfall rates this evening. One big caveat is temperatures that are only marginally cold. They have not moved far off highs in the mid- and upper 30s. With the sun going down, a more noticeable dip is ahead. It could still take until 5 p.m., give or take an hour, for snow to become dominant across the whole area. By about 6 p.m., we should start to see heavier snow zones congealing as temperatures fall through the mid-30s and toward freezing. Moving through mid-evening there could be rapid accumulation in some locations. Upwards of 1-2 inches per hour possible. Heavier snowfall will pull the temperature to around freezing, then it becomes a matter of how long it lasts. An additional complication is that the band may end up rather narrow, where some locations really pile up fast and others are missing out. If in the heaviest, you won’t want to be out on the roads. It’s a good idea to plan to be home as it develops. Also keep in mind our forecast map does not capture localized areas of 6-plus inches that may occur under a persistent heavy band. Recent weather models suggest it could affect the Beltway area, but the exact placement is uncertain. Our next update will be between 4:30 and 5 p.m.

Lee Hamilton was a giant at home in Indiana and a deeply respected leader on the international stage. He embodied the best kind of Hoosier values with his principled, steady leadership across a remarkable career in public service. I was fortunate to know him and to learn from his example, one that is particularly instructive in these times. He will be greatly missed.
