Just for the record, Rehnquist's SCOTUS ruled in 2002 that these kinds of clauses and disqualification based on candidates voicing their beliefs was unconstitutional. A conservative majority ruled this, with Clarence Thomas in favor!

In short - SCOTUS is allowing Alabama to use a map which was found to intentionally dilute Black voters because...who knows. Majority does not bother to explain its reasoning after Alito *insisted* Callais didnt affect this case, b/c it involved an additional constitutional claim

The Supreme Court just tossed out any claim, what ever dubious ones remained, of legitimacy out the window. They literally ruled that Alabama violated the VRA and ordered a second district be drawn. Now they’re overturning their own decision for what reason you ask? Because they felt like it.

The Supreme Court, which ordered Alabama to create a second Black opportunity district just three years ago, has lifted that order one week before the primary. The Purcell principle says courts shouldn't permit chaos too close to an election—it's now an open question as to whether there will even be a primary on schedule.
