#vss365 #2wordprompt Even after years, the cottage still looked much the same. Small, cozy, and far more suited to a fairytale than the real world. Deceptively welcoming. A horseshoe nailed to the door left fingers of rusty stains and fanned her unease higher. Studded through the yard were shepherd’s crooks, wind chimes hanging from them to lazily clink in the breeze. A few crude, metal sculptures shifted and spun in halfhearted starts. Wheels, eyes, and wings in unnerving interpretations of heavenly angels. At least, that was her best guess. The woods had been allowed to creep closer to the back of the house over the years. Branches reached out to nearly brush the faded green siding and ivy climbed the side of the house to creep toward the shingled roof. Like the forest was trying to devour the cottage. Nothing like coming home to make her consider arson. Or rather, how to get away with it. Her nerves jangled, knuckles whitening as her fingers tightened on the steering wheel. In the passenger seat, the cardboard box felt like a silent condemnation. She wasn’t sure how long she’d just been sitting there, dread a hollow pit inside her. Prolonging the inevitable.
