Just got the email that all charges to my open NSF award are paused. I imagine NIH is coming soon. What happens to students everywhere when we can’t pay their salaries, even if it’s only a few weeks of a gap (at best)?

Wow. Ending the year with official NOA for my @NSF CAREER. Excited to take next week *completely* off, and come back ready to engineer some HGT systems for bioproduction…. (1/3)

Check out this blog post about my lab's new technology where we engineered bacteria to mineralize a glass coating around themselves, which allows them to focus light like tiny microlenses! Just out in PNAS: pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pn…

I'm trying something new: A (possibly) daily blog about biology and engineering. I'd like to see whether I can emulate Derek Lowe for, say, one month. My first post is about bacteria that were engineered to act as microlenses, focusing beams of photons.

@NikoMcCarty Thanks for highlighting my lab's new engineered bacterial microlenses for your inaugural post! I think a biology/engineering blog sounds really exciting.

@barbara_synbio What is your username on Bluesky? A ton of new scientists have joined in the past week or so - actually starting to feel a little like Twitter did in the old days

Well done @mulecc - your PhD work just published 😀nature.com/articles/s4146… I think we've only scratched the surface with this... H-NS allowing bacteria to direct their own evolution. Exciting times ahead...

Delighted to support iGEM Rochester's CyanoPrint project that tackles climate change! Using modified cyanobacteria like Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803, they're creating a bio-photovoltaic cell to sequester CO2 and generate green energy. #iGEM2024 #synbio @ur_igem

I’ve been waiting for this talk all conference #SEED2024 - Anne Meyer from Rochester engineering E.coli grow glass lenses that focus light. A brilliant example of ELMs research.

@darren_lipomi I loved the description of making Ice IX in Cats Cradle because it was so easy to make, plus a potent reminder of the importance of lab safety.

Researchers: is there a Sci-Fi / fantasy book or movie that directly motivated your interest in science? I always felt that I wanted the world of Star Trek and that science was the only legitimate route to magic. Star Trek and a great chemistry teacher in high school, that is.

@meyer_roc This is so cool, congrats! Is the direction of the light nano jet arbitrary or can it be directed?

Our preprint on engineered bacterial microlenses is out! We engineered bacteria to display sea sponge enzymes on their outer membranes. These bacteria can self-assemble a bioglass coating around themselves, and focus light into bright, photonic nanojets. biorxiv.org/content/10.110…
