One of my students wants to perform! She asked my advice - I said DO SOMETHING ELSE. The industry is saturated - PA schools take on hundreds of students each year. There are not enough jobs for existing actors/dancers. I now feel that it’s irresponsible to encourage this path ☹️

Why is it actors are advised not to do extra work? Surely this is better than waiting on tables etc? Serious question!

@KelleyCostigan Kelley - sounds as though you could run your own theatre company - not as crazy as it sounds! Small cast, no set woman writer and performer - you may just get some funding from Arts Council especially if your subject is “current”! Good luck

@monumentdancer Thanks, Louise! I have a BFA in Acting & among the many disciplines I have been trained in (& employed for) include: acting, directing, stage management, costume design & construction, wardrobe, hair & make-up, lighting design, set design, sound. I have done just about everything

It’s such a cruel, unforgiving industry and success can be down to LUCK - not necessarily talent. Is there something else you could do in theatre - F of H, costumes, stage management - or teaching? You may also find real joy in playing roles in amateur productions. Good Luck

Okay. Seriously now, I am wondering where to go from here. I have been trying for nearly 40 years to make it as an actor. I have spent 10s of thousands of pounds on my training & skills, all with little impact on my being able to get auditions, representation, or work...
