My friend Ryan Thoresen Carson was senselessly murdered in Bed-Stuy this a.m. He was deeply kind and a force to be reckoned with when it came to community organizing, harm reduction, and environmental policy. Here's a photo I took of him at the Mutual Aid Society in 2021:

@emmadaveypoet @AmericanGwyn I agree with Aaron, Emma. Send your strongest work. Work only you could have written. And send it to a publication where it might contribute to the conversation they seem to have going. Put time and attention toward the work, not the cover letter. And don't give up.

ON SUBMITTING SHORT STORIES TO LITERARY MAGAZINES: I first started sending stories to Lit Mags in 1998. I had no business submitting then: my work was far from ready. I was a 26-year-old MA student at OSU. I didn’t even know how to write a cover letter.
