Someone once told me they know me. Not someone I’m familiar with, a total stranger. When I asked what they knew about me, they said they use to see me talk about design online and dance. I giggled because that is true. I share what interests me but that is where it ends! Sadly, a lot of people do not understand this, they confuse building a personal brand to sharing their entire life story online. I’m here to tell you. Your personal brand is not your diary, it’s not your confession note and most importantly your audience are not your therapist. Most people confuse authenticity with over exposure. You do not owe the internet your family drama, your trauma and the worst seasons of your life just to seem REAL. What you owe your audience is a consistent, clear and honest version of who you are in the context of what you do. Your story matters but you do not need to overshare for them to see you as an authority. Have you ever overshared on this online space?
