On-chain art is a creator and collector’s paradise. On Ethereum, artists spent years learning how to use smart contracts as an artistic canvas. On Bitcoin, it was even harder. There was no rich smart-contract canvas for artists to use. Creators had to literally invent the canvas itself. One step forward was figuring out how Bitcoin art could evolve over time. At first, this seemed impossible. Inscriptions are immutable. Once the art is inscribed, it does not change. Then OCM Dimensions showed the way in June 2023. OCM Dimensions were minted as immutable Bitcoin inscriptions, but the art was initially unrevealed. Collectors owned their inscriptions before they could see the final artwork. After the collection minted, a novel reveal transaction was broadcast to reveal the OCM Dimensions art! (This was also a first on-chain randomized reveal on Bitcoin, and the first use of code libraries such as Three.js and p5.js with recursion, both important techniques for generative art.) Today, the Bitcoin canvas has gotten richer, and there are more ways to create evolving art. The table below shows new ways that artists can explore with their artwork. Not all these techniques have even been used yet!
