Some personal news — last Friday was my last day @DMRegister. It’s been an honor to cover Iowa’s social justice, community and faith issues for 3.5 years. I’m not entirely sure where my next stop is, but I’ll be looking for any opportunities to join the next newsroom.

Iowa State and SDSU is over on Iowa PBS. Awesome to have them back on the college wrestling scene, with their impact on the sport being as big as it is: desmoinesregister.com/story/sports/c….

Over the past few years, I’ve been fascinated with one of the largest federal investigations happening in Georgia, known as Operation Blooming Onion. So I partnered with @zaydee_s to uncover the untold story of an unnamed victim at the heart of the case. 🧵

A woman in Manhattan reported to police that an Amazon delivery man, 5'6'', exposed himself to her. Police did a face recognition search, showed her result, arrested the wrong guy, 6'2''. What did the NYPD not do? Call Amazon. nytimes.com/2025/08/26/nyr…

Wow. On NPR, @gbrumfiel reports a Social Security official “copied the Social Security numbers, names and birthdays of over 300 million Americans to a private section of the agency's cloud.” The source is a whistleblower, who is named: Charles Borges, SSN chief data officer.

The profile pic was a pretty girl. The DM seemed harmless - “hey.” For Jordan DeMay, among a targeted group of teen boys, often high school athletes, this was danger coming in the middle of the night to his small, remote town. espn.com/high-school/st…

Pulitzer-winning cartoonist @AnnTelnaes has quit WaPo, saying her sketch satirizing tech & media titans proving fealty to DJT was killed: “Trying to get in the good graces of an autocrat-in-waiting will only result in undermining that free press.” open.substack.com/pub/anntelnaes…

Missing the snow? Long term warming has not helped. This December, too, was much warmer than normal even compared to updated 1991-2020 climate norms. Here's how snowfall has changed on average per decade since 1959. (limited to January through March)

women died because they received no life saving care as they were having miscarriages in Georgia and the state responded by simply eradicating the committee that investigated deaths of pregnant women.

In Indiana, the average school voucher recipient has never attended public school and comes from a family earning more than $99,000 a year. The cost of the program has soared and is projected to reach $600 million this year. indystar.com/story/news/inv… via @indystar

This is happening in Iowa. And when I asked House Republicans if there were any protections for parents against tuition increases, I was informed the schools are "private businesses" who can do what they want. It's time to hold those who pushed for vouchers in Iowa accountable.
Daniel Long@The_Red_Hat

Spoiler: This happens in EVERY state that adopts school vouchers. The wealthiest people in the state benefit from having their private school tuition supplemented while the working poor pay for it. They then raise the prices to keep the poors out of the choice places.

Rep Miller-Meeks (R-IA) voted against Bipartisan Infrastructure Law that will deliver nearly $470 million to her district. She has attended a highway ribbon cutting and boasted of the modernization of locks and dams on the Mississippi River in her district despite her “no” vote.
