PSA: At the end of 2022 I've stepped back from all of my positions in the mlr-org organization. This also included stopping to contribute to most of the (core) components of the project. 🧵

@Lluis_Revilla In the end there are many OS/arch combinations to account for if the goal is a "complete" suite of binaries.

@patscli Oh, thanks I missed that. One less mystery in how R packages are distributed! So this could be added to the github action for releases to have their own binaries for Ubuntu, windows and macOS...

@Lluis_Revilla Could be yes but note that the binaries are restricted to the OS they were built on. So the Mac ones will only work for Intel macs. And the Ubuntu ones only for the respective LTS. But ofc nothing holds you back from building binaries for just 1-3 OSs, better than 0! :)

@Lluis_Revilla For your own non-CRAN packages you can do so with R CMD INSTALL --build <pkg>. Binaries for CRAN packages are provided by the public Posit package manager.

@patscli I'm interested in learning how to build binaries from packages/tools. I'm at linux/amd64/x86_64.

Allows Github and anonymous posts (with much more options if wanted). Slim, self-hosted. A bit of custom CSS and et voila!

Last, I'd like to explicitly point out that none of this has to do with the finalization of my PhD at the end of last year. The intersection of these events is completely random.

In the meantime, I'll try to refocus on finding out what I want to do and where I can help while enjoying the process at the same time. I haven't done much ML or R development lately but rather devops-related things.

@m_saharia @ChristophMolnar Sadly the biggest problem when not adhering to the "system" is funding. It is hard to get a stable income when you're on your own, especially in academia. Christoph is doing this very well with his authorship but I don't think this would work for most people. Props! 💪

I once met a professor who was OBSESSED with h-index and citations. - Advised me to stop my book, turn it into a paper to get cited - Output not published at icml/ neurips? Worthless - Gave a talk - it was only about flashing status symbols Absolutely corrupted by THE GAME.

@Lluis_Revilla @cynkra_com @geobrenning That's a tradition from the University of Jena (Germany). The coat is a tradition of the institute. The statue is the founder of the university and the goal is to throw "something" (usually round) that sticks to its sword (I don't know the history behind it though).

Last week, after ~ 6 years, finally the disputation of my doctoral thesis happened. For the last 2.5 years I worked on it besides my full-time job at @cynkra_com whenever I found time. Big thanks to my supervisor @geobrenning for the tremendous support! #PhDone
