Former Head Coach at Providence Day School Basketball

Congratulations to Turner Emery (C'98) for being inducted into the Sewanee Athletics Hall of Fame!

Last Friday, a former local high school basketball star turned NBA player gave back to his community. The Grant Williams Family Foundation has partnered with Walter G. Byers Elementary School, a westside Charlotte school, to help the students learn computer coding two times per week on campus. As part of that instruction, the Foundation sent students in the program on a field trip to the NASCAR Hall of Fame in uptown Charlotte to expose them to the possibilities of where a coding-based curriculum could lead. “We believe that every child should have the opportunity to gain experience coding, a skill that's becoming increasingly important in today's digital age,” Williams said. Williams, a starter for the Dallas Mavericks, was raised in west Charlotte and graduated from Providence Day School, where he helped lead the basketball team to a state championship and an appearance in the then DICKS' national high school basketball tournament in New York. Williams later became a two-time SEC player of the year at Tennessee and a first round NBA draft pick. Williams also earned his undergraduate degree in supply chain management in three years and is currently First Vice President of the National Basketball Players Association.
