Kudō: During a conversation I had with Kubo-sensei some time ago in the Spring 2009 issue of Akamaru Shonen Jump, I heard him say:
“There are no plans to incorporate Hell into the manga.”
Of course, the manga also contains elements that evoke Hell, such as Daiguren Hyōrinmaru and Tenken Myō’ō.
So, I asked Kubo-sensei to draw sketches for the setting concepts for the movie that I had come up with myself.
When I saw his sketches, I said:
“These are incredible!!”
Q: Was it Kudō-sensei who created the design for Hell?
Kudō: I handled the overall design.
However, the actual design of the world was created through discussions with the directors who drew the storyboards for each scene in the film.
Our conversations went along the lines of:
“This kind of world design would make the battles in Hell more exciting!”
Although “Hell” has a multi-layered structure with multiple levels, each world/layer is unique in its own way, and I think those “different layers” were extremely interesting.
