@nedboulting. Weird thing. Last week, the town of Chateauroux cropped up twice in separate conversations for no reason, causing me to read up on it. A day later, I bought ‘The Road Bike’ and there it is again (and again) …so I’m going to visit next month. Love the book too.

I understand why team managers don't like gravel/cobbled stages in Grand Tours. They think only about results for their sponsors ROI, and it adds risk that they normally want to avoid. My argument would be that these stages are HUGELY appealing to an audience, and likely to grow the fan base. Wouldn't it great if 5th place on GC in a few years time got your sponsors as much publicity as winning this year, because the sport has grown so much? #TDF2024

@lionelbirnie Hi Lionel, Saw you pass on the climb from Brides-Les-Bains yesterday. Reason for increased crowds on mountains seems clear to me. About 30% of fans rode e-bikes. That’s a new phenomenon.
