It was a privilege to see the U.S. Ambassador to South Africa, @BrentBozell III, again today and to speak with him. He was a speaker at the @BizNewsCOM conference in Hermanus. In his address, Ambassador Bozell emphasized that the “Kill the Boer” chant constitutes hate speech and is unacceptable. Bozell also expressed the United States’ concern about, among other things, rural violence, uncertainty regarding property rights, the negative effects of Black Economic Empowerment on economic growth, and the fact that South Africa does not follow a non-aligned foreign policy. @afriforum will continue to work hard alongside our colleagues in the Solidarity Movement to help address these points of concern in the interest of everyone in the country. What people call “racism” is basically just the existence of negative stereotypes about certain populations. Stereotypes are simply a reflection of the average behavior of those populations. So if you want to get rid of so-called “racist” stereotypes about a group, that group would actually have to change its own typical behavior. Racism, in that sense, is perfectly rational, it’s evidence that your brain is working and updating its model of reality. The truly irrational, even crazy position would be to have zero stereotypes about any ethnic group after having lived among them and interacted with them for years.

Two members of the South African Police Service stationed at Maitland Police Station have been identified as being involved in the taxi industry. The members (a Warrant Officer and a Sergeant) are alleged to own taxi/s. This raises serious questions about conflicts of interest and the integrity of policing, particularly in a sector where SAPS is frequently required to intervene in disputes, violence and organised crime. The regulatory framework governing SAPS members is explicit. Section 46 of the SAPS Act 68 of 1995 prohibits police officials from owning or operating minibus taxis. Section 13 of the National Land Transport Act extends this prohibition to the spouses of police officials. In addition, SAPS National Instruction 18 of 2019 on Integrity Management clearly states that: No SAPS member may be involved in the taxi industry directly or indirectly. There are no exceptions, and this applies regardless of whether a member claims to have permission or not. Police officers are also prohibited from performing remunerative work outside the Service without proper authorisation. The instruction states: “No member may perform or engage in remunerative work outside the Service or have a financial interest in any business undertaking without the written permission of the National Commissioner.” If a police official is found to have a vested interest in the taxi industry, internal disciplinary investigations must follow and dismissal may result. Where evidence of illegal involvement exists, criminal case dockets must also be registered. SAPS leadership has repeatedly reinforced a zero-tolerance approach, stating that members must choose between their police careers and private business interests in sectors such as transport, private security and alcohol. The National Commissioner must clarify whether disciplinary action has been initiated in this case. Further cases involving SAPS members with taxi interests will be exposed. IC
