Basically, Chang’an is a synonym for the Golden Age of the Tang, and a symbol of wealth, stability, cultural prosperity, and a highly flourishing society. The meaning of Chang’an(长安) in Chinese is very worth to unpack. Chang (长) means ‘long’ or ‘eternal’, and An (安) means ‘peace’ or ‘safety’. Put together, the name literally implies enduring peace, which is a wonderful hope for the capital that would remain secure, stable, and free from war. More broadly, it reflects a deep-rooted idea in Chinese culture that linger on even today: a longing for lasting peace, national stability, and a quiet, serene sense of well-being. Because Chang' an carries profound significance, both as a historical place and a cultural symbol, its image in classical Chinese literature came to represent prosperity and openness, stability and growth, peace and exchange. That’s why Chang’an was cited so frequently in ancient poetry, and even in modern Mandarin music, the name still pops up again and again. All of this makes what happened in 755 AD even more distress. That year, the An Lushan Rebellion broke out during the Tang dynasty. This great calamity was no less devastating to the people than World War II. Enormous numbers of people died, Chang’an, a city that owed its peace and prosperity entirely to its people, was utterly shattered in the flames when the rebels stormed in. Palaces and gardens were destroyed, libraries and archives vanished, civilians were displaced, and even the emperor fled in panic. It marked the decline and fall of the Tang Dynasty and gave rise to the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period, which is regarded as the darkest and most chaotic eras in Chinese history. As a Chinese saying goes, "When the nest is overturned, no egg remains unbroken." When the flames climbed high into Chang’an, this city was transformed into a burning house for its people.
