We condemn in the strongest terms the alleged surveillance, intimidation and harassment of Hajiya Asia El-Rufai and Hajiya Aishatou El-Rufai, wives of former Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai. If reports that their phones have been bugged and that they are being followed are true, then this is a dangerous abuse of power and a direct threat to their safety, privacy and fundamental rights. No woman should be subjected to fear simply because of her husband’s political position. No family should be placed under intimidation because of political disagreement. Nigeria is not a dictatorship, and state power must never be used to terrorize private citizens. The security agencies must immediately investigate these allegations and guarantee their safety. The government must also understand clearly that if anything happens to them, Nigerians will ask serious questions. Political persecution must stop. Surveillance politics must stop. Threats against innocent families must stop. We stand with Hajiya Asia El-Rufai and Hajiya Aishatou El-Rufai. Their lives matter. Their safety must be guaranteed.
