I’m simply not going to say a single bad thing about the man who made the last 10 years of Iowa State football more enjoyable than the 100 years before it. The entire athletic department, school, and state are better off because of him. I’m very, very sad but how lucky we were.

@JakeBrendTV @AP @CycloneMBB Think the defense just has to clean up a bit, IMO. Interior passes = buckets/open kick outs. Sloppy on the P&R. Don’t drop defender fast enough. Offside corner defender also plays a little too high. Leaves the back side cut open too much. We win when we just stay home.

My thoughts as No. 3 Iowa State opens up Big 12 play with a 79-69 over Colorado. The Brandt Chatfield Game... Does Iowa State win this game without Chatfield? I don't want to know how the game would've played out with the Idahoan. In 19 minutes off the bench, the senior pulled down seven rebounds... all of them offensive. His seven offensive rebounds combined for 11 of Iowa State's 21 second-chance points... every single rebound led to a field goal or a trip to the free throw line. Four of the rebounds came in the last six minutes. That was the difference. On a night where I thought Iowa State's looked fatigued due to altitude, it was effort plays from Chatfield that sealed the deal. Bravo, Brandt. 4-18 from three is a good sign... Shooting 22.2% from three is not what you want to see, but during the peaks and valleys of a long season, it'll happen. The encouraging part is that Iowa State still won a road game by double digits while struggling from the field and from deep. How'd they do that? 24 points off of 19 CU turnovers, 21 second chance points and 48 points in the paint. You have to factor in the opponent but I continue to be impressed by the amount of ways Iowa State can win. That's important in a Big 12 Championship chase and maybe even more important in March. The offense has been great most nights this season but to show you can win on an off-night is one of the most encouraging feats yet. Concern level for the defense?... I think I've come to the conclusion that this defense won't be as elite as Otzelberger's first three teams. That's okay, because it's still elite. The first two Otz teams *needed* elite defense to win games. It was the only way most nights. That isn't the case anymore. What's important is the ball pressure at the point of attack is still elite, especially from Lipsey, Gilbert, Heise and Jones. The rotations still seem slow to me and I think that's coachable. As long as the defense can still force turnovers and turn missed baskets into fast break points, they'll still be among the nation's elite, even if it's not the level we're used to. Some individual performances... Joshua Jefferson records eight (8!) steals. Holy cow. That ties Iowa State's single-game record (Tamin Lipsey vs Prairie View A&M in 2023.) What an unreal stat by the big man. Jefferson also added 13 points and seven rebounds along with one of the biggest buckets of the game (a grown man post move to put ISU up 66-63.) Curtis Jones led Iowa State with 20 points on an otherwise inefficient night (5-16 FG, 2-7 3PT), but I've said it before, I don't really care about his efficiency. Jones is a big shot maker and sometimes he has to force a *bad* look to get ISU going. That's what he did tonight at the end of the first half. Keshon Gilbert was dominant early and a little quiet in the second half but did have the coolest play of the game and finished 14 points. Tamin Lipsey was pretty good, as well. Big Picture... 1-0. That's really all that matters. Colorado probably won't be an NCAA Tournament team but that's still a tough place to play. To walk out of that place with a win a C- minus night says a ton about Iowa State's ceiling. Those are wins you gotta have in a Big 12 Championship chase.
