They ultimately decided to ignore more serious projections because those models had been unreliable before. They were as wrong as it is possible to be. But no, they definitely thought it would survive re-entry

@naMnaSYt @bigmonkeong No? The united states military has a "no man left behind" policy. We spent millions of dollars and sacrificed so much state of the art equipment to save a downed pilot in Iran just a few weeks ago. Why wouldn't we do the same for an astronaut?
