Why for the World Cup are American sports commentators using "Türkiye," "Cote d'Ivoire," and "Czechia" but not "Deutschland," "España," and "Brasil"?
Can't we just refer to all the countries by the names that we typically use for them in America?
@wischlist@IowaRallyYak@Wrigley_Ivy Ok Davut. That's what we'll call you now since we don't have to respect what people want for themselves.
Have we specifically asked to be referred to as USA? That's the issue here - it's what they want to be called. Some countries don't seem to care (ie South Korea).
@senagles@IowaRallyYak@Wrigley_Ivy Turks call the United States “Amerika Birleşik Devletleri” (often abbreviated as ABD).
Is that disrespectful by them? I don’t think so. It’s their language. What wrong with us using ours?
@wischlist@IowaRallyYak@Wrigley_Ivy Türkiye changed its name in 2022 specifically to align with its indigenous culture. They also wanted to get away from the anglicized name. It was a conscious decision on their part and it is how they have asked to be referred to. Why is this hard?
@senagles@IowaRallyYak@Wrigley_Ivy Both Turkey and Czech Republic remain commonly accepted names for the country. And almost certainly the most commonly used names for the countries among Americans.
@wischlist@IowaRallyYak@Wrigley_Ivy Türkiye officially changed their name in 2022 to better represent who they are and their indigenous culture. They also wanted to get away from the anglicized name. It was a conscious choice on their part. Why shouldn't it be used?
What the fans looked like at a major league game in 1975. I’m gonna recommend you zoom in and poke around for a minute or two. Just trust me on this one.
@Kupilainen@mikesully97@edtechmathteach I posted studies. You ignored them because you clearly have an agenda and no facts will change that. You clearly haven't spent any time as a classroom teacher or you would see that it's much more nuanced than "technology is good," which seems to be your only argument. Bye!
First words out of my toddler’s mouth when I got her from her crib this morning were “Dada, you take me to @Cubs game?” So, uh, guess I gotta get tickets for next week.
@mikesully97@senagles@edtechmathteach Well it has certainly been a boon for the kids who got a chance to learn and document their learning by doing videos, podcasts and other new media skills while in school. Teachers who have not embraced that have left their kids behind.
@senagles@edtechmathteach I clearly do, you refuse to think how we have seen this moral panic before. First it was fantasy books, then TV, then video games. Its also something that will destroy our childrens attention spans.
@IowaRallyYak@Wrigley_Ivy That was mild hyperbole to emphasize a point. I understand that Fox made an editorial decision, and I find it to be an odd one.
Turkey, Czech Republic, and Ivory Coast aren't disrespectful names. They're accepted ones. And the broadcast is for an American audience.
@IowaRallyYak@Wrigley_Ivy It isn't that simple, though. Why as English-speakers, are we apparently not allowed to simply translate the French words "Cote d'Ivoire" into English?
And South Korea has asked the UN to refer to it as "Republic of Korea," so why are we using "South Korea" for the World Cup?
The @Phillies are the only MLB team in the modern era to be down to their last strike with nobody on base in the 9th inning 2 games in a row but win both.

Trump is now claiming that scuba divers cut the vinyl at the reflecting pool. let’s remind everyone the depths of the pool, 18in on the sides, 30 in at its deepest. Think scuba divers would have been spotted pretty damn easy!
