the red button is the only button that has the potential to change anything. The options can be simplified as Red - if we agree that we anticipate that at least some will press the blue button, this button is the conscious choice to kill all the blue button pressers to protect the self. Blue - if we agree that we anticipate that at least some will press the red button, this button is the conscious choice to save everyone. What red button pressers don’t understand is that the 50%+1 requirement is irrelevant.

Why wouldn't every single person just press red, and live? There's sort of a left/right split in understanding here, I think. Society can function perfectly well if (1) half of all people risk their own lives to carry the least "moral" OR if (2) everybody literally just takes care of himself.
Tim Urban@waitbutwhy

Everyone in the world has to take a private vote by pressing a red or blue button. If more than 50% of people press the blue button, everyone survives. If less than 50% of people press the blue button, only people who pressed the red button survive. Which button would you press?

@sergeanttheodor @patrickhays2 @wil_da_beast630 Mate, the whole dilemma arises from the fact that someone pressed the blue button to begin with. Private Schmuckatelli fucked up and now we have to involve half the world population to save him. Including children btw.

"Those selfish red button pressers wanna murder all of us blue button pressers!!! >:c" You're literally free to not press the "russian roulette for me pls" button; no benefit whatsoever to partaking in this pointless gamble Red: 42.1% Blue: 57.9% You can't make this shit up

@GaryLaserFren @bluebird_gwc @redtachyon Both are choices if the same game. It’s a fallacy to think red is opting out. Red is the only choice that results in dead people.

Every human stands in front of a massive woodchipper. You can either jump into the woodchipper or not. The woodchipper has a design flaw - if more than 50% of humanity jumps in, it will break and everyone survives. If less than 50% do it, those people will die. What do you do?

@SonnyBunch Same if everyone presses blue. Also if only 50% + 1 people press blue.

@Snack_0verflow @ClockWorkChrono @HeritageUSA69 But the red option isn’t just selfish, it also fundamentally misunderstands that it is the only option that changes civilization. The blue option is the only one that truly maintains life as we know it.

@Snack_0verflow @ClockWorkChrono @HeritageUSA69 Not really. If we’re thinking in terms of “nothing happening”. The dilemma starts with a threat of death (otherwise there is no dilemma). Red is the “nothing happens to ME” option whereas blue is the “nothing happens to ANYONE” option.

Not really. If the threat of death isn’t inherent to the dilemma then there is no reason to press either button. But “do nothing” isn’t an option. You HAVE to press one of the buttons. Red is the “kill the blue button pressers” button. If you press red the world becomes a very different place. Think avengers after thanos deletes 50% of people and civilization is trying to recover from the aftermath. The red button is the only button with any material consequence. Blue is the “nothing changes” button. Nobody dies, life goes on as normal, just as it had before the dilemma. So in both cases, combat or dilemma, your available decision set still boils down to “do you save yourself or do you save others”

@woarna_is_right Vegans are notoriously insensitive to humans. You know how some people are autistic which makes them good at math and then bad at social interactions? Vegans “care about life” just not human life lol

The fact that the dilemma exists means you’re in harms way at the onset of the dilemma. If you weren’t in harms way there is no forcing function to press either button which changes the dilemma from 2 options to 3 options. So you start the game being in harms way. The red button is “save yourself” It’s bitch ass behavior. But admittedly “save yourself” is always logical.

@GaryLaserFren @bluebird_gwc @redtachyon That’s not correct. You’re not putting yourself in harms way. You’re already in harms way. There is a threat of death. Press red to save yourself Press blue to save everyone*

@Snack_0verflow @hardepenger You’re guilty of the same exact thing you pretend to be calling out: you’re assuming the conditions of voting. It’s more of a stretch to claim children aren’t part of “everyone” than it is to say they would get a vote.

@hardepenger I understand the question for one. I also value living more than virtue signaling over something that isn't even virtuous to begin with. Inserting newborns etc. into it is post hoc rationalization, as the question is about people of sound mind (default assumption for "voting")

This is fascinating. Logically the answer is red button: If you push the red button, you survive guaranteed. That applies to everyone. Just press red and go home, everyone lives, the end. The only reason you’d press the blue button is: A. You’re a fucking moron. B. You want to die. C. You’re willing to risk your life to save A&B from the consequences of their own decisions. It’s the perfect embodiment of the mentality that society constantly needs to deprioritize itself to cater to the lowest common denominator. To save them from themselves. Now the question is: is that suicidal empathy that will bring about the end of society, or is it a remarkable display of humanity that sets us apart from the rest of the animal kingdom?
