This paper presents an improved approach for mapping single-cell RNA-seq reads with optimized transcriptomic references which markedly recovers previously missing gene expression data. @Allan_HPool nature.com/articles/s4159…

Under current conditions, customers experiencing outages should expect crews to respond between 12-24 hours from the time the outages are reported. Restoration may take longer depending on field conditions. TY for your understanding. Our crew won't stop until all are restored.

@ENSAlerts Why not ask employers and businesses to turn up thermostats a few degrees, and reduce air conditioning at night when people are not working? Have seen a lot of calls for individuals to tackle the problem but not employers.

CALIFORNIA: Conserve energy now to protect public health and safety. Extreme heat is straining the state energy grid. Power interruptions may occur unless you take action. Turn off or reduce nonessential power if health allows, now until 9pm. (Source: CalOES)

maximally informative. Her method is very resource efficient, allowing her to compute >1M cells on a fairly typical AWS instance. nature.com/articles/s4358…

Missing genes due to introns and poor 3’ annotations is such a big problem across so many single-cell datasets and @Allan_HPool’s method offers a rational, systematic way to address it. So happy to see this work out now!
Allan-Hermann Pool@Allan_HPool

First Pool Lab pre-print: bit.ly/3yoewcy. We resolve a major pain with 3’ single-cell RNA-sequencing (10x Genomics etc.) – missing gene expression data from thousands of genes. This stems from suboptimal reference transcriptomes and can easily be recovered. T below: 1/12

Back by popular demand... our science communication course @ucsf. I'm thrilled to be exploring how we share science with our families, communities, and the general public with @WallaceUcsf and UCSF students. I'll be sharing resources and updates here.... (1/4)

@PracheeAC I guess the question is whether you read it or skimmed through selectively for information you’re interested in..

I finished reading a preprint and noting supplemental movie 7 was of particular interest only to open twitter and learn that “no one reads papers.”

@sisichen @Slate Yeah, it's terrible. Been almost 5 years for me. Awful experience BUT it got me to start studying the science of skin vs. the science of skincare products more deeply and now I'm obsessed!

@jessicadefino_ @Slate However! I do think some products can be helpful. I was a beauty product minimalist for most of my life, but now swear by a few things: a ceramide face cream. and vitamin C and niacinimide to help with fading age spots. and sunscreen.

@jessicadefino_ @Slate Totally, I'm really wary of most products with intense active ingredients (like retinoids) since they can cause more damage.

@jessicadefino_ @Slate Ah I see! Steroid withdrawal is insane. I have a friend who got steroid addicted due to bad eczema and his whole body erupted in rashes that didn't resolve for about two years.

@sisichen @Slate Ha! I have struggled w/ my skin for decades. Been on (prescription) Accutane, topical steroids, antibiotics, retinoids. Tried every product known to man. Still struggle w/ resuming skin barrier function after Topical Steroid Withdrawal (cont'd)

@jessicadefino_ @Slate Congrats on finally getting it published! The article mostly resonates... except on the necessity of moisturizers. My skin is incredibly dry in the climate I live in (socal). Even when I don't use soap, I have to use ceramide cream or else i get dry flaky patches....

So sad to hear Arthur Mattuck has passed. I took more classes from him than any other prof. I'll never forget how he roasted us to make us pay more attention. "Grading your homework was like prospecting for gold, or even silver.... or maybe just lead." news.mit.edu/2021/arthur-ma…
