@David_Jorgonson @BretDevereaux My impression of Bret's posts on Hellenistic vs Roman fights is that the Hellenistic armies basically reflect the structure of their societies, and the "Macedonians rule, everyone else is ruled" really was a weak point compared to Roman alliances

It is striking to me that, as much as a lot of modern pop history on ancient warfare loves 'elite' and 'crack' units of troops, the armies I can think of that really have 'elite' units are Hellenistic armies, which of course famously get wrecked by the Romans, who don't.
