I'm creating 3D tours of open single cell RNA-seq data in UMAP space. Here, using data from 50k brain cells by the @AllenInstitute . (portal.brain-map.org/atlases-and-da…). The UMAP position and class of every cell is read into Blender, realized as a stylized, class-specific model I sculpted

Had fun working on this project characterizing the mechanical behavior of latrophilin-3 (Lphn3), a cell adhesion molecule that is important for excitatory synapse formation in the brain! Tweetorial below (1/5)
Alex Dunn@Dunn_Lab

New preprint: @bri_zhong shows that pN forces can potentially activate latrophilin 3, an adhesion GPCR that regulates synaptic plasticity. A first step for the lab in understanding this fascinating class of signaling proteins. Congrats Brian! t.ly/ETL_

Illustration I created for @A_Amunts as a stylized interpretation of his group's new findings in @Nature on the assembly of the mitoribosome. We eventually brought this illustration to life in the animation below. Paper link: nature.com/articles/s4158…

How do cadherin-catenin complexes interact cooperatively with F-actin to assemble into large, organized clusters observed in cells? Our new pre-print may provide some insight. Big shoutout to my co-first author @bax1337 for working with me on this! biorxiv.org/content/10.110… [1/3]

@vvachhar I think you should get a doggo to - you know - help increase your sample size.

Dog genetics question: there are two very cute phenotypes: lil white socks and lil white tail tip. I often see lil socks without tail tip but not the other way around. Is this a real thing?

Short animation I made from one of my previous scientific illustrations: A little macrophage, getting ready to perform some phagocytosis and enjoy a picnic feast of bacteria and viruses. #SciArt #Blender3d

I'm working on bringing some of my previous scientific illustrations to life as animations. Short animation stylizing the idea of CAR T-cell therapy; here, engineered T-cells conducting surveillance, searching for cancer cells to destroy. #sciart #Blender3d

I created this illustration for @ljiresearch for an article describing research at LJI on the role of mucosa in immunity (bit.ly/3jBsrn6). The idea was to represent epithelia and epithelia-associated T-cells as a first line of defense against invading pathogens. #SciArt

HOW do cells respond to being peeled off e.g. when you pinch yourself too hard? We find that once cells partly detach, newly extruded membrane tethers attached to the surface (e.g. retraction fibers) guide cells back to their original location tinyurl.com/mr3ajzsu 1/

How do hundreds of species coexist in rainforests or your gut without driving each other extinct? Our new work shows how correlations among interspecies interactions, e.g. the enemy of my enemy is my friend, may help maintain the diversity of ecosystems tinyurl.com/mrxrhx3x 🧵

I like exploring creative ways to illustrate scientific ideas. This is an illustration I created to represent the idea of mechanotransduction: a process in which cells sense the mechanics of their environment.

"Macrophage picnic." An illustration I created to represent the idea of a macrophage. Macrophages are cells in the immune system that consume foreign organisms, such as bacteria and viruses, through a process known as phagocytosis. #SciArt
