Over the summer, #Illini Bruce Weber and I talked about the 2005 roster, and if that could happen in today's landscape. NIL and transfer portal could impact it. "We would've had to come up with a whole bunch of money," Weber laughed. "Can you imagine how much Dee Brown was worth in NIL? He was a walking commercial." Illinois was led by veterans Luther Head, James Augustine, Deron Williams, Roger Powell and Brown, who could all command a high dollar amount. I'm going to speculate here -- the big phrase is the $10 million dollar roster club in 2025-2026. I think this team, if you wanted to retain everyone, would've blown past that number. Also, in today's landscape, many players transfer after one or two seasons. Could Illinois have kept all of those players for 3-4 years now? Most of the players were recruited by Bill Self, who left for Kansas. Players leave for coaches all the time. That old school formula led to a 37-2 record and one of the best teams to not win the National Title. "It took us time to get to that point. Basketball is about repetition, habits and brining teams together. And that's when you have that success as a program."
