@whatsthat @fredleept tbh I tend to be skeptical of teleological arguments in historical analysis.
English

@ikesharpless @fredleept I’m intrigued by Nomadology’s point about how the State is not a newer “more evolved” form & that nomadic tribes intentionally foil centralization of power to stymy the development of a state. Also I’m a little depressed at how poorly US laws have held up against abuse of power
English

@ikesharpless @fredleept I hope history proves us all wrong. In that I hope our imaginations will invent new ways to live together that none of us could currently conceive of. Not the end of history, my friends. 🙃
English

@whatsthat @fredleept I really don’t know - but I do agree that in addition to being cynical the critique of nationalism as such is imo also utopian. Maybe history will prove me wrong, who knows.
English

@ikesharpless @fredleept Maybe cynical, but what does our history as a species prove? States lead to concentrations of power which always attract the wrong types who want to wield that power. Wars follow shortly after. Is the utopia of a non aggressive powerful state possible?
English

@whatsthat @fredleept Personally I think this is quite a cynical view.
English

@ikesharpless @fredleept Is there any other kind? Prior to WWI, some optimistic elites hoped the world was close to the end of needing nation states and borders. Nations by their very nature create an us-and-them dynamic. The paranoid part comes in with the fact that humans are involved.
English

@fredleept This is what this week’s Economist terms “paranoid nationalism”.

@EpicureanDeal “So ugly it’s cute” worked for the gremlin, but never for that industrial monstrosity

@qikipedia Also there’s more to the feel of lifting something than weight and mass.

@whatsthat No no no. I couldn’t live like that 🫣. It looks like he had a friggin picnic! Next thing you know he’ll be at the dinner table or driving off in your car.
Did you at least leave him some fries 🍟?

@looneyfox1 @justin_garson Perhaps reading the literature about how intestinal flora appears to have a profound affect on mental health. You can’t fix that with therapy

Just learned that in 1980 the @AmerMedicalAssn removed a tenet in their ethical code forbidding commercializing medical treatment 🤬 What’ll they do for an encore?
