Nigeria is finally seeing the true cost of neglected children. Those 20 million out-of-school kids didn’t disappear, they grew up into the bandits, kidnappers and terrorists we are now fighting with billions of dollars. When a child is ignored, society pays the price later… with interest. Neglect education today, battle insecurity tomorrow. This is the harvest of the seeds we refused to plant.

Some stories are too painful to watch. But this one? It was too painful to write. Omoshalewa was in law school when her life was first interrupted in 2014. What started as a sharp stomach pain quickly turned into an ovarian cyst and a hospital that left her on a bench, unattended for hours. Since then, she’s had 14 surgeries. Fourteen. Each one promised relief. Each one offered a bit of hope. But the pain always came back stronger, stranger, harder to name. By 2021, she was being injected with Kenalog-40 daily which led to her skin changing and her memory declining. Later on, she found out that she had Cushing’s Syndrome: A result of long-term steroid overuse. She passed out in her sleep, choked on saliva and developed necrosis in both hips. But through it all? She kept working, asking questions and more. What struck me most wasn’t just the trauma. It was how often she was dismissed, told to pray more and told that her symptoms were imaginary. Omoshalewa’s story is not rare. That’s the part that should scare us. Because beneath the medical errors and systemic failures… Is a young woman who just wanted to breathe without pain. We talk about reform. But real reform starts with respect. With humility. With care that doesn’t punish people for surviving. If you’re a health worker reading this, I hope it reminds you that every patient has a story. And sometimes, their life depends on whether you listen. like I tell my children: we share the world with people who don't share our values and they have just as much of a right to be here as we do. It's how the world is set up. Keep that at the back of your mind.

A pregnant woman dying because her husband couldn't afford N500k should put some context to the conversations we have here. One such context is that women are right to size up the pocket of a man before deciding to settle down with him. Her life is literally at stake.

“We believe that it is unconstitutional to scapegoat women for speaking out against sexual harassment” Read our full statement below: We at Document Women are deeply concerned about the handling of the sexual harassment petition against Senate President Godswill Akpabio by the Senate Committee on Ethics, Code of Conduct, and Public Petitions. In addition to the case being dismissed for “procedural flaws”, the petitioner, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Ufuaghan, has been suspended for six months without pay and is required to write an apology letter for the Senate to consider lifting or reducing her suspension. Alarmingly, this judgment was delivered by the individual accused in a case he also presided over. This situation represents an assault on justice, and it poses a risk of a similar miscarriage of justice for every Nigerian woman. We believe that it is unconstitutional to scapegoat women for speaking out against sexual harassment. No legal technicality should overshadow the seriousness of allegations of sexual harassment, which merit a thorough, impartial, and transparent investigation. This misuse of legalities reflects an institution that frequently silences women and raises concerns about its integrity in ensuring that all Nigerians, regardless of gender, are treated with dignity and respect. While we applaud Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan for resubmitting the sexual harassment petition against Akpabio, this should never have happened in the first place. We are therefore calling for Senate President Akpabio to step down to allow for an independent investigation. Our legislative processes should not be used as tools to silence those seeking justice. We stand in solidarity with Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan and all women who bravely come forward with similar allegations. We urge the Senate and relevant authorities to ensure a fair and transparent investigation, free from procedural obstacles, in order to uphold the principles of ethical governance, accountability, justice, and equality for all. Signed, Document Women.

Today is my birthday! 🥳 I’m feeling tenderness toward my 15-year-old self who couldn’t have imagined we’d make it to 35, let alone that life could feel this good. To celebrate, I want to share 3.5 lessons for anyone younger who might feel a bit lost or unsure about this big, beautiful, and sometimes scary thing we call life. Lesson one: Lostness is a doorway. Accepting & even celebrating that you feel lost is the first seed of change. That dark void in front of you when you try to visualize the future? It’s the soil where you and your ideas can grow. No clear path? Good. Everything becomes possible when we don’t have the illusion of certainty. Lesson two: Curiosity is the answer. Whether you experience fear, anxiety, or a conflict in a relationship, the key is to approach any challenge from a place of curiosity. Why do you feel this way? How does it work? Why did A lead to B? What could you experiment with? Everything that brings growth in life is downstream of curiosity. Lesson three: Success isn’t the goal. We make ourselves miserable by chasing outcomes that supposedly define our worth and determine our happiness. But letting go of linear goals doesn’t mean letting go of ambition. Living a good life, contributing good ideas, nurturing good relationships... that’s ambitious too. The half lesson: Learning is for life. Nothing’s fixed. Life is a giant liminal space between your first and last breath. Everything keeps on evolving, including you. That means nothing that feels bad today is permanent. But it also means nothing that feels good today is permanent either. And this is exactly what makes life worth living: the pain and the pleasure, the despair and the discovery – it’s all a succession of fleeting moments to be savored. Thank you for being part of this journey. Here’s to more curiosity and savoring all the moments life has to offer. I’m excited to keep learning in public over the next 35 years and hopefully beyond 💫 P.S. If you’d like to get me something this year, consider preordering my book Tiny Experiments. Helping share my work with the world is the best gift I could hope for :)
