Smoke was also more so respectful than Stack. Stack only protected Stack & he even failed at that so yk he couldn’t have possibly done the same for Mary (Hence Smoke telling Sammie that Stack couldn’t watch his own back). Stack was also selfish & naive compared to Smoke.

I believe it’s because us women could relate to Annie’s nurturing side psychologically. The “wounded & traumatized” man meets the woman who wants to heal, protect, & maybe even “fix” him. We didn’t see her attempt to fix him but the two other options are valid.

I feel like there’s something to be said about why so many of us women found Smoke more attractive than Stack. Sure Stack was more immature, but part of why Smoke was so cold was from traumatic experiences. Man’s was reserved b/c he was grieving. I find that interesting.
