No need to be embarrassed. This is a great use case that works for a lot of people.
For those who haven’t tried it, no special prompting necessary. Just chat. Pi and Claude are 2 other free apps that are great for this

Scrambling through your voter's guide before Tuesday's election?
Google's NotebookLM has been a super helpful tool for me. Upload documents and get summaries, ask questions, generate customized podcasts, add notes... all rooted in the docs w/ citations. Nifty little workspace.

This is a perfectly fine approach, but shouldn’t be the only approach students are exposed to.
Writing w/o using AI is a skill.
Using available tools (like AI) to enhance your writing/efficiency/productivity is a skill.
Both have their value, and each can aid the other.

My kid, now a freshman in college, told me her professor announced today (first day of class) that she’s so tired of obvious AI generated essays that she’s carving time out for in class essay writing: shorter essays, hand written, with just the printed primary source material.

With the rate of development of these AI models, now is a good time to revisit that prompt you tried last year.
If you want to try out different models side-by-side to see which one works best for your needs, the @lmsysorg chatbot arena (lmarena . ai) is a great place to do it!

Remember, there are multiple levels to AI use as a teacher.
For example:
You may not feel comfortable using AI to grade writing, but you might find value in being able to instantly generate questions for students that challenge them to think critically about their submission.

@mickie_mueller I haven’t found it to be very helpful. It really struggles with understanding what I’m actually asking for. I do find the AI summaries of reviews to be helpful though.

Are you sure the California location of Orland is correct? Orland is a small farming town (population 8200 in 2022) in Northern California. Do you mean Oakland? It doesn’t fit with the other locations listed at all.
