@JamesHandscombe @StudyMaths @hopkinsmmi Maybe not 'activity' but I can see this generating absolutely loads of thought (thus memory), curiosity, appreciation of limits of our own knowledge etc. (I like it when I disagree with someone who I usually agree with 99.9% of time with!)

Lovely to see Class of 2025 and 2027 achievement and destinations banners proudly displayed at @AstreaAcadSheff. Showing younger scholars the top of the mountain, so they can believe they can achieve similar success to their peers as they climb their mountain. Making it real.

After the brilliant news from @AstreaErnulf, we're delighted to share that all Astrea schools are now rated 'Good' by @Ofstednews! We’re so proud of our colleagues and, most importantly, delighted for the pupils and communities we support ❤️ #Astrea100 #WeAreAstrea

I would ask @bphillipsonMP to visit the highest performing schools in the country & ask staff: 1. Why do ALL of your children succeed in & enjoy Maths & English (including disadvantaged)? 2. How do you ensure behaviour is excellent? 3. How do you achieve such high attendance?

This is a great video describing what is essentially the strategy of the best schools. The dominant approach, however, is everyone shuts their doors and teaches. I’ve worked in both types of schools. There is no contest: the alignment school is much more effective and satisfying.

@Mr_Raichura Totally agree, Pritesh. The talented @JJewellmaths did a session related to this (on 'didactic teaching') at #MathsConf36 where he took the Wikipedia definition and rewrote it after exploding the myths. I have pictures but won't share without Jack's permission 😀

Whilst direct instruction involves telling pupils things directly, this is only the building block knowledge. It sets pupils up to think *harder* & solve unknown problems BECAUSE they know more than via discovery. Knowledge ENABLES thinking. What other myths need busting? 4/4

Two of the biggest myths about direct instruction: 1. Pupils are passive while the teacher talks endlessly. 2. The teacher tells pupils everything so pupils don’t think for themselves. These are completely wrong. 🧵 1/

#MathsConf36 Thank you to everyone who attended our session on the importance of additive reasoning and why it is the gateway many children/students haven't secured as they leave KS2. #mathsconf36 Contact us if you would like to know more
