The project also recovers the Black women authors Howe excluded. As project directors Katherine Adams and Jacquelyn Thoni Howard put it, "An ethical approach to recovery must reckon with the exclusion of Black women from the Beautiful Sisterhood of Books, not reify it."

Recovery Hub for American Women Writers
It's showcase time again! This Beautiful Sisterhood of Books is a digital recreation of the Women’s Literary Department from the 1884 World’s Fair in New Orleans. The project recovers the curatorial work of Maud Howe and situates her collection in its historical context.

We also do peer review and showcase of digital humanities projects, which helps make project contributions more legible to administrators, hiring committees, and others outside the field. We have calls twice a year, and the next is coming up in April.

Do you have a recovery project in the early stages? We're offering project cultivation again! Cultivated projects receive a year of scholarly and technical support, plus a $2,000 stipend. The priority deadline for submission is March 15, 2023. Learn more: recoveryhub.siue.edu/cultivation/
