I’ll be honest, I don’t fully grasp every detail of the Champions League squad rules, but the Tel/Solanke situation does actually make sense to me. Tel was very much on the fringes earlier in the season because his form simply wasn’t there, and if he’d started stronger he probably would have been selected ahead of Odobert. Sadly, he’s only really hit his stride late on. Now Frank is effectively choosing for the latter stages of the competition, not just tonight. With Richi out and Solanke getting fitter by the day, Tottenham need a reliable CF deep into the tournament. Solanke is the main striker, and that reality drives this decision. It’s harsh on Tel now, you could question whether Tel should have been included earlier, but at the time, very few of us even batted an eyelid when he wasn’t, because only in the last few games has he started to look truly dangerous.
