Let me chime in on the piracy discourse going on here. Without piracy, I wouldn't discover the East Asian films I talk about and share clips on the timeline for a lot of the old-school stuff. I discover these films during the bootleg VHS era in NYC. Many people from my country (Dominican Republic) do not have access to a lot of stuff that is available here (The States). From physical media and theatrical releases. I hunted down for decades many releases that are now OOP and continue to do so which I shared at one point to bring awareness because a lot of them were not available anywhere. Not even on streaming services in their region. The greatest joy I got is when I shared a very rare Japanese film (Call Girl コールガール [1982]) that was only available on VHS. When I uploaded that film (Did massive numbers) someone who worked on that film thank me. A year later or so. There's a HD print on Amazon Video Japan. Again, I'm all about spreading awareness to a lot of OOP films. If you have access and money you shouldn't worry about those drive accounts or torrents, they are not for you but for others that have no options to view these films. There are pirates that actually hunt down film negatives or prints that have been abandon and they restored it. Or you have passion projects like the Star Wars 4K77 which people have been begging for years for FOX to restored with none of that CG that was added years later. Making out of print films available when the studio behind them don't care anymore is a form of preserving that film. Same applies to streaming films or shows that get delisted with no physical release or digital options for purchasing. Of course, there is nothing compared to having that film negative but is not in the technical sense what Dave was referring too when it comes to film preservation. Yes, it can be jarring seeing a new release that is easily available to the ones that are fortunate to have access to it or a film that is slated for a release but like I stated earlier. This is not aimed at you that have access but to the ones that don't. Specifically, people not in the states or a major market.
