Separated parts can continue to operate "wirelessly" if the owner abstracts and gives away functions from their main body to a cluster of their own mass. However, they need to burn through a lot of energy to send out orders and commands to anything currently unattached.

Helvet stuff Arthropod and reptile based beings (as well as mammal hybrids of either), can break down and reconfigure their mass into other shapes for different purposes. The advantage to getting used to living at smaller sizes is more unused mass for more complicated constructs.
