Maj. Gen. Mark Quander, deputy commanding general for Military and International Operations at USACE Headquarters, visited projects at installations including JBER, Fort Wainwright and Fort Greely on Apr. 1-2. He also presented commander's coins to Neil Murray and Curtis Henry.

Maj. Gen. Jason Kelly, deputy commanding general for Civil and Emergency Operations at @USACEHQ, visited the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory’s Permafrost Tunnel Research Complex near Fox on Mar. 26.

The Alaska District conducted a tabletop exercise in preparation for the contingency of glacial lake outburst flooding in the Mendenhall Valley near Juneau requiring USACE emergency management action in March.

The Alaska District conducted a civil works “lessons learned” workshop on Mar. 16. At the event, Justin Miller, senior geotechnical engineer, delivered a presentation of rock quarry assessment and development and facilitated a hands-on demonstration using bags of candy.

The Alaska District’s Hero of the Month for March is Emily Vullo, project manager in the Formerly Used Defense Sites Section. Vullo is an instrumental member of the Environmental and Special Programs Branch team, helping to boost morale and resiliency within the group.

Fern Spaulding, Kayla Campbell and Matt Ferguson, biologists in the Environmental Resources Section, worked with staff from the City and Borough of Juneau to conduct winter benthic ecology studies in support of the Auke Bay Navigation Improvements feasibility study in Juneau.

Alaska District staff represented USACE at a family night event at Williwaw Elementary School in Anchorage on Dec. 18. The team’s hands-on presentation consisted of a toothpick architecture display, origami building demonstration, wetlands model and atlatl throwing station.
